The information content of lightcurves of eclipsing binaries is described. To this end, approximate formulae are given and demonstrated for most relevant eects, so that the reader can have a feeling of what can or cannot be obtained from a lightcurve. A few widespread numerical codes are briefly described and intercompared, pointing out their strengths, limitations and validity ranges.
